Job Purpose

This job is responsible for the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of underwriting data in the company's general ledger and associated systems across the Connected Living lines of business

The roles provides the UK Financial Controller with timely and pertinent information to enable them to report to the business on performance

The role also ensures the company remains VAT and IPT compliant/optimised

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the day-to-day running and co-ordination of a Control team of 3 people
  • Oversee the period end process for the preparation of underwriting results
  • Ensure period end provisions for outstanding claims and IBNR have been correctly made, liaising with actuarial and underwriting teams as required
  • Responsible for the quality of underwriting data in the general ledger and associated systems
  • Maintain and develop the internal control structure around the underwriting result process, including the completeness and accuracy of the recording of underwriting transactions in the production systems
  • Represent Finance to the wider business in matters of data quality, core systems development and new business take on
  • Ensure interbranch accounts are balanced and settled on a timely basis
  • Ensure that balance sheet reconciliations for specified accounts are prepared and completed on time
  • Review internal processes within the finance function to mitigate areas of risk in addition to strengthening internal controls and related processes
  • Liaise with the Tax Dept for VAT and IPT compliance as required, ensuring that returns are prepared and submitted on time and working as necessary with external advisers on compliance and planning issues
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the financial reporting process
  • Ensure optimum report design through Felita and other reporting functionalities to assist management decision making
  • Manage all staff reporting to the position to effectively recruit, train, evaluate, motivate, delegate and monitor their activities
  • Work closely with Internal Audit / SOx Manager as required to address any internal control issues
  • Effective liaison with the External Auditors and US based Assurant teams

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Experience of managing a finance team within a mid to large sized organisation
  • Must be organised, work well under pressure and be able to uphold a professional outlook at all times
  • Credible with senior management
  • Flexible, adaptable and comfortable with change
  • A proactive and flexible attitude is essential to meet set deadlines and to assist other areas of Finance.
  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with 5 years PQE and a high level of technical proficiency
  • Advanced spreadsheet skills

Desirable Skills or Experience

  • Experience of Felita (Sun Systems) or equivalent such as SAP
  • Experience of database based business intelligence tools e.g. Microsoft Power BI
  • Experience of the insurance industry
